With the advent of miniaturized sensing technology, which can be body worn, it is now possible to collect and store data on different aspects of human activities under the conditions of free living. This technology has the potential to be used in automated activity profiling systems which produce a continuous record of bodily activity patterns over extended periods of time. Such activity profiling systems are dependent on recognition algorithms which can effectively interpret body worn sensor data and identify different activities. The automated recognition of bodily activities (stationary, walking, running, jogging) using body worn accelerometer data is a challenging area of work. In this book existing activity recognition system were discussed. In Existing activity recognition systems suffer from several obvious practical limitations such as the location and nature of sensors that people will tolerate. Other issues include ease of use, discretion, cost, and the ability to perform daily activities unimpeded. The results are getting from the Accelerometers with different subjects are collected through pc and can be analysed by Matlab software by activity variance and DT algorithm.

Micro Electro Mechanical Systems (MEMS) have an extensive use in different areas of technology. Inertial sensors (accelerometers and gyroscopes) are one of the most widely used devices fabricated using MEMS technology. MEMS accelerometers play an important role in different application areas such as automotive, inertial navigation, guidance, industry, space applications etc. because of low cost, small size, low power, and high reliability. This book presents a detailed SIMULINK model for a conventional capacitive sigma-delta accelerometer system consisting of a MEMS accelerometer, closed-loop readout electronics, and signal processing units (e.g. decimation filters). By using this model, it is possible to estimate the performance of the full accelerometer system including individual noise components, operation range, open loop sensitivity, scale factor, etc. The developed model has been verified through test results using a capacitive MEMS accelerometer, full-custom designed readout electronics, and signal processing unit implemented on a FPGA.

A lateral-axis differential capacitive MEMS accelerometer is designed and fabricated in MUMPs process. The system has been characterized with an untethered laboratory mouse. The received signal shows various acceleration waveforms corresponding to different types of mouse activities. The MEMS accelerometer and interface circuit can be potentially integrated with other biological sensors to achieve a miniature implantable biosensing system.
