This work focuses on the design improvement of a tri-axial piezoresistive accelerometer specifically designed for head injuries monitoring where medium-G impacts are common, for example in sports such as motorsport and American football. Given the particular biomedical and biomechanical application the device requires the highest sensitivity achievable with a single proof mass approach, where basically all three axes of measurements are detected with a single mass suspended by surrounding beams. Moreover, a very low error, below 1%, is expected for these type of applications where accuracy is paramount. The optimization method used is based on the progressive increment of the sensor mass moment of inertia (MMI) in all axes. The theoretical hypothesis to confirm is that an increment of MMI of the device proof mass would determine an increment of device sensitivity with a simultaneous reduction of cross-talk in the particular axis under study. The work numerically demonstrates the hypothesis validity by simulating the optimized device mechanical structures with Finite Element Method. A final optimal shape is selected as the best possible output of the optimization process.

Another important contribution of this book is that comprehensive analysis considering the impact of many parameters, such as the doping concentration, temperature, noises, and power consumption on optimization of the sensitivity and resolution has been proposed in order to enhance sensitivity and resolution of the accelerometer.

A wireless sensor platform is developed to enable rapid proto-typing for such applications. Real world tests are conducted with multiple nodes in various environments to validate the performance of the protocol. Test results indicate that the packet error/loss is less than 1% with multiple nodes streaming data to a single server. Further enhancements and optimization are performed to make the protocol better suited for the sporting applications. This book is the outcome of the Master Thesis of Rama Subramanian S in Delft University of Technology and is carried out in and funded by Philips Research Eindhoven, The Netherlands.

This book presents a study of two major different types of nonholonomic mobile robot (MR) problems. Different solutions for these problems are proposed. The first problem is the trajectory tracking of nonholonomic MR. In this part, two different types of controller's are designed based on the optimization method (i.e., EA), Which are Fractional Order PID (FOPID) controller and Fuzzy-Backstepping controller. The second problem is the trajectory generation of nonholonomic MR. In this part, an Arnold modified chaotic system, based on the trigonometric functions is proposed.This system is used to design a controller for the MR (chaotic MR). In addition, the effect of vibration on the trajectory tracking performance of the MR is studied experimentally and a fuzzy controller is designed to compensate for the vibration effects. In order to validate the simulation results, an experimental procedure is performed. In this part, an actual MR is developed. The new robot controller circuit (Robot's brain) is equipped with different types of sensors, such as 3-D gyroscope, 3-D accelerometer, and five proximity (Distance) sensors.
