The health monitoring of a machine is an assessment wherein the significant change in performance parameters is observed and analyzed with an intention to predict the failure. In this context, many types of analyzers are available but the overall cost is very high and may not be affordable to all. Hence this research work presents a low-cost solution for the development of a novel machine health monitoring system that is reliable, accurate and easy to handle. An open-source platform Arduino Mega 2560 along with the ADXL335 accelerometer is integrated with MATLAB to store & display the acquired data. The program is designed to convert time domain response to frequency domain response using classic Fast Fourier Transform. The system exhibits time domain and frequency domain response to interpret the state of a machine component. The experimental assessment of the developed system with respect to the standard commercially available analyzer is carried out and showed equivalent competency. This system can be used as a monitoring tool in small scaleindustries & for laboratory work in engineering colleges.

This will cause changes for future health care systems, and both fall detection and fall prevention will pose a major challenge. Ambient Assisted Living (AAL) is a research area in which concepts and information systems for assisting elderly individuals are developed. Fall detection, as an important discipline of AAL, investigates a broad range of approaches including wearable devices. With their growing popularity, mobile devices with their embedded motion sensors, their software capabilities and cost-efficiency are well-suited for fall detection. A test framework for collecting and analyzing data regarding fall detection is presented. The framework consists of a RESTful Web service, a relational database and a Web-based back end. It offers an open interface to support a variety of devices. The system architecture is based on the state-of-the-art theoretical background of AAL and on the evaluation of an existing software. In order to test the framework, a mobile device client recording accelerometer and gyroscope sensor data is implemented on the iOS platform.

MEMS accelerometers play an important role in different application areas such as automotive, inertial navigation, guidance, industry, space applications etc. because of low cost, small size, low power, and high reliability. This book presents a detailed SIMULINK model for a conventional capacitive sigma-delta accelerometer system consisting of a MEMS accelerometer, closed-loop readout electronics, and signal processing units (e.g. decimation filters). By using this model, it is possible to estimate the performance of the full accelerometer system including individual noise components, operation range, open loop sensitivity, scale factor, etc. The developed model has been verified through test results using a capacitive MEMS accelerometer, full-custom designed readout electronics, and signal processing unit implemented on a FPGA.
